Twenty Years: Time For New Goals

April 8th, 2012 marks the 20-year anniversary of my diabetes diagnosis. Last year, I thought of throwing myself an "F-you Diabetes" party, complete with chocolate fondue fountains, cake, gobs of frosting, etc. You get the idea. I'm still going to do that, but now that I am grabbing diabetes by the balls, I would like to mark such a momentous occasion with the achievement of two specific goals. Proof that I can, literally and figuratively, have my cake and eat it, too. Ready? By my 20-year anniversary, I will achieve an A1C of 7.0, and weigh 140 lbs. It will mean that over the 20 years of living with this disease, I will be in the best health of my entire diabetic life. In the past, I may have achieved the A1C, but gained weight in the process. When I have lost weight in the past, it has been due to breastfeeding, or from spilling ketones due to high blood sugars.

These goals, and the achievement of them, reflect the fact that I can have my cake and eat it, too. I can maintain two healthy pregnancies, and give birth to two beautiful babies, despite what this disease sometimes dictates for people's lives. Don't let it dictate who you are, what you can do, and what is possible. Numbers-wise, by April 8th, I will be living close to a non-diabetic life, one that no 20-year anniversary can stop.
