The Frustrations of Exercise and Diabetes

I took advantage of Pink Eye Monday and squeezed in another 40 MINUTE elliptical session. There is going to be quite a bit of trouble-shooting the fine balance between exercise and blood sugars in the beginning of this. Oh how I wish I could just jump on and go, sweat my ass off, and not think about it for the next three hours. Here are just some of the issues someone with diabetes, on an insulin pump, must consider:

1. Blood sugar cannot be too low when you begin an exercise session; otherwise, you run the risk of "feeding the low." (Counter-productive when trying to lose weight)

2. Blood sugar cannot be too high when you begin an exercise session; otherwise, you run the risk of your blood sugar actually rising as a result of the exercise.

3. Everyone reacts to exercise differently, and you have to figure out how much to reduce your basal rate on your pump before, during, and after exercise.

So I tried to exercise after lunch, didn't bolus, hoping that the exercise would bring it down. Normally, my blood sugars react strongly to exercise. It looked as though I had levelled off during the session, but as you can see from the photo, my blood sugars had other plans post-workout. So I corrected, and now I am waiting for it to come down. At least I didn't have to eat anything for a low (that happened yesterday).

Progress...
